The architecture balances clean, contemporary lines with warm natural materials, allowing the cottage to sit comfortably within its wooded setting. Covered porch spaces create a welcoming transition between indoors and out, while exposed wood detailing adds depth and character. Site planning and scale were critical, ensuring the ADU fit seamlessly within existing infrastructure while maintaining privacy and ease of access.

Inside, vaulted ceilings and expansive windows flood the home with natural light, enhancing the sense of volume within a compact footprint. Wide-plank hardwood floors and a soft, neutral palette set the stage for custom woodwork that carries deep personal meaning. Built-ins and shelving were thoughtfully designed and crafted throughout the home, maximizing storage while keeping the interior calm, open, and uncluttered.

The kitchen is efficient, welcoming, and perfectly scaled for everyday living. Custom walnut cabinetry, floating wood shelves, integrated appliances, and solid-surface countertops come together in a layout that is both functional and refined. Every detail was considered to support ease of use, durability, and longevity—key elements for aging in place.

A custom steel-and-wood stair with minimalist cable railing adds sculptural interest while maintaining openness between levels. The loft space feels cozy yet light-filled, enhanced by warm wood ceilings and built-in storage. The bathroom continues the home’s thoughtful design language with a curbless walk-in tiled shower and integrated grab bars, demonstrating how accessibility can be seamlessly incorporated without sacrificing elegance.

Performance and sustainability were foundational to the project. The Wells Guest House achieved Green Built Home Gold Level Certification as well as Energy Star certification, supported by a tight building envelope, efficient systems, and carefully selected materials. These strategies ensure year-round comfort, low operating costs, and long-term durability.

At its core, this North Asheville ADU is a reflection of thoughtful, small-scale custom building. Designed with heart, built with precision, and rooted in family connection, the Wells Guest House demonstrates how luxury, sustainability, and personal meaning can coexist within a carefully crafted home.
